Softball Juniors Learn Vital Lessons

The national Under-19 softball team assistant coach, Kabelo Kwape says their below par performance at the just ended International Softball Federation (ISF) world junior championships in Yukon, Canada is an eye opener.

He said they learnt a lot of things at the tournament and he believes the knowledge they acquired will be of great benefit, not only to the junior team but to the softball family in general. The team returned home on Friday.

Botswana did not win a single game and finished last in the 12-nation event. Kwape admitted that the tournament was very tough but their fighting spirit was not dented after they were humiliated by the champions Australia 15-0 in the opening game. Australia retained the title for the fourth consecutive year. Kwape added that some teams were beatable and Botswana was unfortunate not to have won a match. "Next time we go to a competition of this nature, I promise that we will be a better team as we know exactly what to expect," Kwape said. He explained that the team did not come home empty handed as some players got ratings. Pitchers Kagiso Mogale and captain Eric Simwanza were rated 11th and 16th in the tournament. The team managed to hit two home runs in the tournament, and according to Kwape this is a first for Botswana at any level. He said in the past, it was difficult for national teams to hit home runs at such a level of competition.
