Shillinde ineligible to play for Botswana

England-based national team trialist Bobby Shillinde is ineligible to play for Botswana because he holds a British passport.

Zebras' coach Stanley Tshosane was running the rule over the 21-year-old player after he was recommended by FIFA-licensed agent Comfort 'Big Fish' Ramatebele. Tshosane, however, confirmed the passport issue had ruled the player out.

"We were not aware that he had a British passport, so that means he cannot play for Botswana. We did have a look at him, but had to let him go because of the passport issue," Tshosane said.Ramatebele said he was aware that the player was a holder of an England passport. However, he said according to FIFA laws the player could represent the country. "We will take this as an opportunity as a learning curve because we have seen it happen in other countries where you find a player carrying another country's passport, but playing for his country of birth.
"I think we need to look into our legislation and see what the hindrance is and address it because we have a few more players that are based outside the country and want to play for Botswana."
