Setlhare bows out

Long-serving BDF VI men volleyball team utility player, Tiro Setlhare has announced that he will retire in the next six months to become an umpire.

Setlhare joined the army side from Mafolofolo in 2000 and became a household name at the SSKB-based club.

He told Mmegi Sport yesterday that he has done enough as a player and it is time to contribute to the development of volleyball in a different role. "I have a feeling that I have been playing for a long time and it is time to pave way for the youngsters. I am not being pushed out but I believe that stepping down will enable us to see new talent. BDF VI have capable youngsters who I believe can continue bringing trophies to the barracks," he said. Setlhare asserted that he wanted to stop playing this year but he postponed the decision because of injuries to many players at his club. "I want to concentrate on umpiring. I intend to go for some courses next year and for International Candidate Referee. They need someone who is no longer playing. I could have gone to Turkey in September but because of financial constraints, it was not possible," he said.
