Rugby Spreads To 67 Schools

Botswana Rugby Union (BRU) vice president Bob Lekan says they have introduced the game to 67 junior and senior secondary schools this year, thanks to sponsorship from Kgalagadi Breweries Limited (KBL) through their brand, Powerade.

Under the three-year sponsorship, the company gives BFU P100,000 annually for grassroots development. The sponsorship deal was sealed at the beginning of this year. Lekan says that schools' rugby is not funded by the government because it is not yet a BISA sport.

But despite this, BRU has popularised the game in many schools. The KBL sponsorship allows BRU to conduct coaching clinics in the schools. It funds a schools' league that has been running since the late 1990s.
