Princess of the pitch

She has shared the pitch with some of the world's most celebrated players. She has also travelled to different parts of the globe. She is the country's undisputed champion, has won countless medals and the first Motswana to represent Botswana in the World Singles Champion of Champions held in New Zealand last year.

 Yet Botswana's women's bowls champion Lebogang Mascarenhes shrugs off the accolades with typical modesty. "It's not a big deal. It is only that I have got love for bowls, which words can not describe," she says. A keen and talented bowler, she was crowned Botswana's women's singles champion in 1999, which saw her walking away with a gold medal.

Mascarenhes can't hide her pride at the progress she has made because when people think of bowls they think of her. "I'm the first Motswana to win three medals in a row. Bowls can also take you anywhere around the world. I have been to Malaysia, England, and to Australia thrice," she says.
