Olympic medal elusive

Botswana's hopes of winning a first ever Olympic medal may have gone up in smoke last night with her brightest prospect, world champion, Amantle Montsho, letting it slip away as she finished fourth in the women 400 metres final.

The reigning world and Commonwealth games champion clocked 49.75s seconds to finish behind American, Sanya-Richards Ross (49.55s), Great Britain's Christine Ohuruogo (49.70) and another American DeeDee Trotter who finished third with 49.72s.

Montsho, who won both her heats and the semi-finals finishing First, started the last night's final in lane seven, sandwiched between Richard-Ross in lane six and Ohuruogo in lane eight. She recorded a reaction time of 0.198, slower than all the medallists, but managed to maintain a good pace in the first 200 metres of the race. The American, Richard-Ross who had a brilliant start off the blocks was flying at the last curve with Montsho seemingly  struggling to keep up with the leading pack that included Ohuruogo. By the final stretch, it became clear Montsho will struggle to get a top three finish trailing at sixth position. She however managed to recover in the final 50 metres and caught up with Trotter at the line but the American had already crossed to grab the bronze medal.
