New Horizon get shot in the arm

Botswana's oldest table tennis club, New Horizon, got a shot in the arm when they signed a two-year sponsorship deal with Sejosenye, a local hardware company. At the end of the deal, the Gaborone West-based development club would have received 1,280 balls, 60 rackets, three tables and four nets.

The total value of the deal is in the region of P20, 000. Club secretary Marang Ramahobo said the sponsorship was a major boost to their development efforts. "Our aim is to have a team that can compete with South African and Egyptian youth clubs by end of September 2016. Now we have the tools, the onus is on us to work hard," Ramahobo told Mmegi Sport. The agreement is that every three months, the club will receive 60 balls. They will also receive 10 rackets from the lowest grade to the highest after every six months. "We will also receive a table and a net every year," he said. The club, housed at the youth centre in G-West, is home to 12 youngsters aged between six and 16. Ramahobo believes the gesture by the company will enhance passion for the game among youngsters.

"It's a tactical, skilful exciting game. Once they have mastered the skills they love it with all their hearts."Twelve kids attended the launch during the week. The club is the only surviving club founded after the formation of Botswana Table Tennis Association (BTTA) in 1994. New Horizon was formed in 1998. Ramahobo is hopeful relations with the Chinese-owned company Sejosenye opens up the possibility of getting a Chinese coach.China is rated number one in table tennis. Ramahobo revealed that the country's top two players Bonolo Mabote and Rorisang Siema were drilled by a Chinese mentor who was in the country.
