Netball affiliates divided over missing audits

PALAPYE: Botswana Netball Association (BONA) affiliates will have to wait a little longer for the 2008 financial statements to be audited.

This emerged at the BONA Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Saturday when president Tebogo Lebotse informed the meeting that the finances are yet to be audited. This is because the financial documents that were lost have not been recovered. The affiliates were informed during the 2011 AGM that the documents had been lost. The affiliates were disappointed when Lebotse told them that no progress had been made on the matter. The documents reportedly went missing at the offices of the accountants, Mac Consultants.  After compiling the accounts, Mac Consultants were supposed to hand it over to the auditors but that did not happen. Lebotse told delegates on Saturday that no progress had been made in recovering the files. She explained that there was nothing much that BONA could do because the consultants were engaged by the Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) for them. "Since we do not have a contract with Mac Consultants we have been engaging with BNSC to follow them up." Lebotse said considering the time it has taken it was doubtful that the finances would ever be audited.

The Palapye meeting was divided on the way forward. While the 2009 and 2010 finances were audited some affiliates felt it would not make sense to interrogate them while the previous year is pending. There were worries about the time it is taking to resolve the matter and the affiliates accused the association of failing to do its job. They felt that other financial statements are not a true reflection, as they did not have opening balance from 2008. Some affiliates were not convinced that the finances were not audited and suspected foul play by the association's executive committee. The president at some point warned affiliates not to come up with wild allegations. This was after one affiliate suggested that somewhere between BONA and Mac Consultants something was not done properly and that the association could be hiding something. Some members wanted the meeting to look at the 2009 and 2010 audited financial statements in order to achieve progress. Progress was halted for about two hours, as affiliates could not agree on the way forward. When it was clear that the two camps were irreconcilable the matter was put to a vote. However, before the voting those who felt that other financial statements should not be looked into asked for a brief adjournment for them to caucus on the matter.  After the caucus majority moved that it would not make sense to discuss the financial statements.
