National Stadium to be upgraded

The government has advertised a tender to upgrade the National Stadium in Gaborone. The tender in the latest edition of the Government Gazette invites architects; civil, electrical and mechanical engineers; quantity surveyors to bid for the design and construction supervision of the proposed upgrade.

It was not possible to confirm the details of the upgrade because officials of the Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) are in Algeria for the All African Games (AAG). In recent years, the stadium - the biggest in the country - has proved small during major events. Since former Zebras' coach, Veselin Jelusic upped the performance of the national team, fans have attended international games in large numbers exposing the stadium's limited capacity.

Though the league in the country is not run professionally, clubs are attracting more supporters. The Botswana Football Association (BFA) has indicated that it would want the prestigious Africa Cup of Nations to come to the country and a major upgrade of the stadium might be a step in the right direction. The existing stadium was built in 1985-1986 and needs major refurbishments to put it back to acceptable standards.
