Mean Machine Leads BDF VI To Top Eight Finals

OTSE: By nature, BDF VI coach Selebatso Mabutho wears a mean face. On Saturday he was even more stone-faced when his side met the stubborn Diphatsa in the Debswana Top Eight volleyball semi-finals.

He was restless and knew exactly what was in store.  In the end, his side escaped with a narrow 3-2 win over Diphatsa in a tough duel. BDF VI will now meet Mafolofolo in the finals scheduled for October 6. Mafolofolo beat Kutlwano by the same margin in the second semi-final of the day. It was evident even before the games that it was going to be war as BDF erupted into song. The team came firing from all cylinders from the first whistle and Diphatsa wilted from failure to block Francis Dingwe's balls. But Diphatsa recovered sufficiently to resist BDF VI with captain Leabaneng George leading the onslaught.  The well-built George saved his team when all chips were down.

Diphatsa fought fiercely to win the first set 27-25 in a closely-contested encounter. BDF won the second set as Diphatsa made it 2-2 in the fourth set. But Diphatsa failed to maintain the tempo in the fifth and deciding set, allowing BDF VI to reach the final. Surprisingly, the Francistown side had a poor fifth set, failing to do basic things like calling for the ball and colliding with each other. Though BDF VI had the weakness of touching the net several times, Diphatsa failed to capitalise on this. Tabaka Mothudi was the weakest link in the Diphatsa side as he fared badly when it mattered most by missing simple balls. Mothudi seemed to have a problem with the size of the pitch as he kept on spiking balls out. It is a mystery why he was not substituted.  After the match, Diphatsa captain, George, said they started well but lost focus in the second set. He did not really know what happened in the last set because they were not under any pressure.
