Mamelodi dreams professionalism

The FIFA Technical officer (Gaborone Office) Ashford Mamelodi was the guest speaker at the Mascom Premier League awards recently. Below we publish an abridged version of his speech

It is fitting that this event should be celebrated after a gruelling league season that succeeded in entertaining football enthusiasts throughout the country. Botswana football is indebted to Mascom for this generous contribution; we are equally indebted to the Premier League including clubs for making available over 95 percent of the current Senior National Team and National Under 23 players, who have in the recent past been competing laudably in the various competitions that they have and are participating in. It is thanks in part to Mascom and the clubs from where these players come, that Botswana National Football finally lost its tag of 'whipping boys of Africa.'

It is indeed a time that we should critically review and determine areas in which we should improve in order to justify a return on investment by Mascom, who by all accounts are not a charity organisation, but rather a business looking to improve its profits through the sponsorship of the Botswana Premier League; the responsibility therefore of retaining Mascom as a partner of football beyond their three-year commitment rests squarely on the shoulders of member clubs of the Botswana Premier League.
