Hosts dominate First Sun golf tourney

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Host club, Selebi- Phikwe dominated the inaugural First Sun Alliance Open golf tournament over the weekend.

Again, a youngster, Tremyne Granger walked away with top honours after beating Malcom Ralls on a count-back on 42 points. The win emphasises the ascendancy of young players after another budding talent Shane Granger (Junior) beat a strong field in the Barclays Open last month.

Save for Vincent Segokgo, all the players that finished in the top 11 in the weekend event were from Selebi-Phikwe. The tournament attracted 37 players from Francistown, Selebi-Phikwe and Gaborone. It was played in searing heat. Despite the high temperatures, players produced magnificent shots. Enock Mushango came third with 40 points while another young sensation, Le Roy Pearmain was fourth. He was trailed by Oganeditse Marata whom he beat on count-back. Segokgo broke the Selebi-Phikwe dominance when he came sixth winning on count back with 38 points. The on-form Farida Pearmain was seventh followed by Ishmael Musonza, who lost on a count back with 38 points. Another Phikwe golfer, Benjamin Mutuli was ninth while Shane Granger (Senior) was 10th just ahead of Elia Chimbwete. Mike Martins won the longest walk prize while Linda Chimbwete and Robson Mlotshwa got the nearest to the pin award.
