Golf betting is back

Betting returns to golf this weekend after a two-year hiatus. Secretary general of the Botswana Golf Union (BGU) Ben Tobedza has said they will re-introduce betting tonight prior to the start of their flagship event, the Standard Chartered Bank-sponsored Botswana Independence Open.

He said the winner in the betting game will pocket P6,000-plus. "It is a winner-takes-all betting. Usually it is confined to predicting who will be the overall winner of the tournament. It is different from other betting in that it does not cover a lot of areas for betting but it still remains popular among golf enthusiasts," Tobedza told Mmegi Sport.

He said golf enthusiasts will gather at a dinner dance at the Gaborone Golf Club tonight to bet. "A person is allowed to bet as many times as possible in the evening. At the end of the betting, the money is counted and people go home knowing how much will be pocketed by the lucky person who predicted the winner of the tournament."
