Darts not a game of drunkards - BODA

Botswana Darts Association (BODA) is striving to debunk notions that darts is game for the drunkards. BODA spokesperson, Peter Sekgwama said people still believe that because darts is mostly played in bars, only those who drink alcohol can take part in it.

He pointed out that darts is just like any other sport and people should realise that the assumptions are wrong. "This sport is only played in bars because when it comes to venues, we have not been catered for. If we were included when the sports facilities are built, we would not be playing darts at the bars," he said. He said it is their wish that one day, darts will be catered for when sports facilities are built. He added that if they had a choice, they would not be playing darts in drinking places.

Sekgwama said that darts is a game played by responsible people. "We are even trying to encourage children to play this sport. We have made a proposal to the Botswana Integrated Sports Association (BISA) so that the sport can be included in their activities and they have promised to come back to us," he said. He added that if darts is a sport for the drunkard, they will not be taking it to schools. "Who can take kids at that age and introduce them to alcohol? I can tell you that most of the people who play darts in this country do not drink alcohol and they never drink alcohol while playing the game," he added. He said other countries have made great strides in youth development in darts and BODA is going to do the same for Botswana.
