Chess champs underway

The long awaited World Chess Championship (WCC) starts today in Mexico City with eight Grandmasters (GM) battling out for the title

He will face world number one Viswanathan Anand (2792), Alexander Morozevich (2758), Peter Leko (2751), Levon Aronian (2750), Peter Svidler (2735), Boris Gelfand (2733) and Alexander Grischuk (2726). The tournament ends on September 30. This year's WCC is a return to tradition and part of a compromise deal after a decade-plus rivalry between FIDE and organisers of the Classical World Championship. The deal was sealed last year when FIDE champion Topalov and his Classical counterpart Kramnik fought for the unified world title.

 
The duel produced the undisputed world chess champion for the first time in 13 years. When FIDE adopted a knockout format decide its champions, many top players to pulled out of the organisation. The players argued that the knockout format is not suitable in chess where a game can be lost by a single mistake unlike other sport where several errors can still guarantee a win.
