Local chess celebrated their 30th anniversary in grand style, joined by some of the leafing corporate players, a world chess body vice president, BNSC chair, at the glittering ceremony that was also characterised by awards of recognition to deserving players, officials, and chess sponsors and the media.

The 30th anniversary diner night at the GICC proved to be a blessing to local chess in many ways. At a time when the  government is drafting a new sports policy that would  see Botswana now having a separate body for Games, and sports, the BNSC chairman, Solly Reikeletseng on the night announced to chess that he supports chess as a sport. The BNSC chair however, encouraged chess to make  a submission that would motivate the policy makers into recognising chess as sport, not recreational games.

In yet another show of support, Barclay's acting Managing Director, Aupa Monyatsi gave a glowing report about the  beauty of the sport of chess and invited them to make proposal to Barclay's for partnership. Monyatsi said he finds  talking to chess players stimulating, and using chess  as a strategic marketing tool appealing to any corporate entity.
