Cheetahs go for glory again

BDF Cheetahs appear determined to defend the rugby league title they lifted for the first time last year.

The Cheetahs continued with their amazing run in the six-team league last weekend when they easily toppled UB Rhinos from the top spot over the weekend. Under the tutelage of national team mentor Gareth Gilbert, and led by the evergreen wing back Mooketsi Mooketsi, the army side outclassed the Rhinos 28-6 at the Gaborone Club on Saturday.

The match started at 1.30pm because the league committee decided to play a double header on the day. However, the soldiers, with an uncompromising back line and adventurous attack, turned what was expected to be a tough title decider into a one-sided affair. Gilbert was impressed with his line of defence that made things difficult for Rhinos. "I am absolutely happy with the way the boys performed today. They gave the Rhinos no chance and we were on the offensive all the time.  We are ready to clinch the title like we did last year.  Our team is one of those few ones made up of locals and you could see they are very skilful and they have the passion. That is why most of them are in the national team. The likes of Gaborone Club have been doing this for a long time because they come from a different background. They know the culture of rugby, they are very experienced, but the other week my boys beat them, which shows that the locals are learning very fast," said the coach.
