BPL, Supersport close to a deal

The Botswana Premier League (BPL) and Supersport are reportedly inching closer to penning a broadcasting deal, this after a successful trial run. The two parties have been engaged in intense negotiations for a month now, during which the pay-per-view channel aired games on two weekends.

BPL chief executive officer (CEO) Bennett Mamelodi confirmed yesterday that they have intensified talks and are close to sealing a deal. The deal is expected to be wrapped up within a week, although Mamelodi would not confirm this. Negotiations started after the termination of RP Productions' contract early this year. Supersport then moved in and aired the first leg of the Mascom Top 8 quarterfinals held at Molepolole Sports Complex on a trial basis.

While discussions were still underway, BPL were forced to make an arrangement with the public broadcaster, Botswana Television (Btv) to cover the second leg of the knockout competition. In their deal with Mascom, BPL agreed that the knockout competition would be aired on television. The temporary arrangement with Btv led to speculations that Supersport might have pulled out.
