Botswana resuscitates Davis Cup bid

Botswana Tennis Association (BTA) will for the first time in two years send a team to the Davis Cup scheduled for Cairo, Egypt, next month.

The association stopped sending players to the tournament, citing a string of poor results. Batswana have a history of performing poorly in the tournament as they are knocked out in the preliminary stages. BTA spokesperson, Trevor Modise said they wanted to focus on building a strong team and believes that the squad is now ready to compete. It comprises experienced players like Phenyo Matong, Aobakwe Letang, Shingirai Mozondiwa and Innocent Tidimane. The team is under the tutelage of coach Peter Mphele who also believes that the boys are ready. Matong, who has an international experience having played in the United States of America (US), is expected to be at the pinnacle of the team. The team went into camp yesterday and Mphele said the boys were responding well. The team will train twice and day before leaving for the Egyptian capital on May 6 for the May 13-19 competition. A press conference will be arranged to introduce the team to the media before departure. The team is expected to take part in a preparatory tournament before the start of the tournament proper in Cairo.
