The newly established Botswana Primary Schools Sports Association (BOPSSA) held its first competition over the weekend in Serowe. The event involved three sports - football, netball and athletics. Ngami region came tops in athletics followed by Okavango and Lobangwe. In football, Gantsi was first ahead of Mmasebotswa and Fraboto. Mmasebotswa are the netball champions while Lesomogalethame are the runners-ups. Gantsi region got position three.

BOPSSA spokesperson, Edward Moreti, said the organisation was born after the realisation that primary school sport lacked proper body to run it. At the moment BOPSSA do not have structures and will work with the Botswana Teachers' Union (BTU). Moreti said that currently they only run four sports codes -athletics, volleyball, netball and football. He explained that more codes would be included as the organisation grows. He said their mandate is not only to run primary school sports regionally but to have national competitions.

Moreti hailed the birth of BOPSSA and said it would improve the running of sports at primary school level. The BOPSSA executive committee comprise Ofilwe Fane (president), Justice Kgabeng (vice-president), Mogametsi Kowa (secretary), Bontle Chigala (vice secretary), Godfrey Chezuba (treasurer) and Moreti as the publicity secretary. Terror Mokwena, Mogakolodi Bagwasi and Kefentse Tirelo are additional members. The officials will serve three-year terms.
