BONA Constitutional Hitch

The Botswana Netball Association (BONA) has put the amendment of its constitution on hold because of technical hitches.

The process has been thwarted by failure of some of BONA affiliates to append their signatures to the changes and too much power given to the executive committee.

The changes were made in 2006 but have not taken effect because the Registrar of Societies has spotted the technical hitches. The changes must be approved by all BONA affiliates to take effect but this has not happened because some of the signatories cannot be found. The constitution was modified and submitted to the Registrar of Societies for approval in 2006. However, BONA spokesperson Bakwena Oitsile said the amendments were turned down by the registrar because not all the affiliates who took part in changing the document appended their signatures. Besides, the registrar said the document gave the executive committee too much power that must be reduced. Oitsile said for 18 months, they have failed to find all the stakeholders to approve the changes specified by the registrar.

"We even sought help from their clubs to help us find them but we have failed," he said. He added that they will make a last-ditch effort to hunt the signatories and if they fail, they will ask their clubs to sign for them.
