Whither BNF - a critique of our critics

For sometime, the Botswana National Front has been subjected to a barrage of criticism and malicious attack from various forces, including the media. Needless to mention that we in the BNF accept criticism and debate as integral components of a democratic political culture which we greatly value.

What we object to is unfounded attacks against our movement and deliberate distortion and misrepresentation of its activities. Mmegi's coverage of our primary elections was typical of this unfortunate trend.

Prior to the primary elections, Mmegi ran several articles accusing the BNF leadership of improper interference in the running of the primaries and manipulating the electoral process to promote the interests of its favoured candidates. In its last Editorial on the issue, it even denounced the whole BNF primaries as a sham, obviously preparing the leadership for a latter indictment against the BNF leadership in the event that the outcome of the primaries did not correspond to its own perception of fairness. Had Mmegi cared to check the BNF's constitution prior to making such spurious allegations, it would have found out that all sub-committees (including the Elections Board), charged with carrying out of various functions are in fact appointed by and report to the central committee. Under these circumstances, the questions of interference can never arise. Had Mmegi cared to investigate further, it would have found that the Central Committee had no preferred candidates and therefore there could never be any issue about manipulation of the process to favour one candidate as against the other.
