We have been misunderstood

The National Amalgmated Local & Central Government Workers' Union (NALCGWU) is extremely disappointed at the negative coverage that you gave to its recent press release concerning the upcoming BDP Congress.

You have maliciously distorted the message conveyed therein and falsely accused NALCGWU of endorsing Daniel Kwelagobe ('DK').  You further alleged that the endorsement was motivated by a selfish desire on the part of Johnson Motshwarakgole, to come to the aid of his cousin DK.   In all your articles concerning our press release, you have distorted the values of NALCGWU.  Because you do not understand these, we will set them out for your benefit.

NALCGWU firmly believes in the proposition that all Batswana are born free and equal and are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights, key amongst these are the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  All these have in the last 12 months come under severe strain.  The level of human rights abuse over the last 12 months is unprecedented.  This is a concern that is shared by the vast majority if not all human rights-conscious citizens.  Unfortunately, you have not been very effective in highlighting these human right abuses.   In fact, it is with great disappointment that we have noted in a couple of editions that your Managing Editor has written sycophantic letters defending the President and suggesting that other newspapers were subjecting the President to too much scrutiny, conveniently losing sight of the fact that the media has a responsibility to continuously subject every act of his to scrutiny, for the better working of our democracy.    Whilst we realise that your newspaper needs to placate Government, to avoid losing much-needed government advertising revenue, at NALCGWU we believe that principle must always be placed before monetary interests.
