This is not the way

It is weeks since the Taung fly-over was opened. The schools are closed and the traffic congestion has somewhat eased, particularly in the morning. The debate on the traffic congestion in Gaborone, should resurface time and again. Traffic jam is becoming terrible in Gaborone, particularly during peak hours.

As more and more vehicles are purchased facilities such as parking in the city are becoming too limited. Some three to four weeks ago on Radio Botswana programme - Masa a Sele the Gaborone City Council indicated that once the fly-over at the removed traffic round-about that used to exist near Taung level crossing is completed and operational they will close the road that is currently being used by traffic that crosses the railway near the new fire station.

This is a surprising decision by the Gaborone City Council (GCC). In fact even the reasons advanced by the City Council to take such a move simply because it is going to be dangerous or even fatal for motorists to risk being hit by passing train(s). I do not support this position. That road must remain operating and used together with the fly-over. This will undoubtedly ease traffic bottle neck at the new traffic lights as traffic flows from north of Gaborone and Kgatleng District. It is an oversight for GCC to think of closing that particular road. It is important to come up with a long term plan that is sustainable.
