This is not funny

I found it unfortunate that the writer of the news story Cat meat livens up Chibubuku party which appeared in the Friday 22 February issue of Mmegi on page 12 featured the event in the way he did.

It was obviously intended to amuse readers and raise a laugh. Will this mean that Batswana, hungry for meat will start to kill cats, to try this new addition to their diet? Is cruelty to animals ever funny or laughable? Perhaps writers of such articles should consider the attitudes that are revealed by such a way of dealing with an event of this kind.

It is cruel to allow dogs to tear a cat to pieces but the whole approach of the article suggested that this was very amusing and no-one had any objection to this proceeding but all enjoyed the resultant feast. So cruelty becomes a source of amusement! Where do we go from there? If we treat animals this way how do we deal with human beings who get in our way or are troublesome? Torture them to death too?
