Mogalakwe is innocent

I would like to express my dire disappointment and despair about the decision in which the Botswana National Front (BNF) Executive Committee suspended Mosolotshane Councillor, Mogalakwe Mogalakwe from the party.

As a young Motswana with full interest in the political atmosphere that prevails in our country I do believe that the decision was unjustified and unrealistic. The BNF leadership alleges that Mogalakwe displayed unruly behaviour by disclosing the party's secrets, and this is what earned him the suspension. Personally, I do not have a well fitting interpretation of the word "secret" particularly when it comes to politics. I am still grappling with the ideal definition of the word. Without much ado and dwelling on technical issues I believe that "secrets" are supposed to be a myth at the BNF. As an opposition party one of the expectations on its inception was to criticise the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) where and when transparency seems bleak, hence Puo Phaa! Or straight talk! As the motto goes. Like justice, transparency does not necessarily only have to be done but it also has to be seen to be done.

I am not really interested whatsoever in what Mogalakwe is alleged to have said or done. Whether or not he did as it is alleged, that is neither here nor there because I believe he was acting within the expectations and essence of Puo Phaa! If now all of a sudden parameters are being set and sanctions are being meted out to contain fearless speakers like him then where has all the dreams of democracy and transparency gone to? Have we now switched from the notion of Puo Phaa! to something else? I think the BNF has so much to explain to account for the suspension of Mogalakwe. In the mean time the explanation already given does not hold water at all.
