Foreigners should respect our President

May I please be allowed to air my views on the ongoing onslaughts on our President. The rate at which foreigners are continuously disrespecting our President is quite alarming and worrying.

To say it is shocking that people find it easy and comfortable to blurt out anything they deem fit about His Excellency would be an understatement. The most worrying thing is these insults are uttered by foreigners who have come here to milk our country and rob us of our hard-earned money in the name of investment. It now looks like every Jack and Jill think they can have a piece of our President while we, the people of Botswana, see the need to continue awarding him the respect that he so much deserves. Botswana as a democratic country is known for its peace and for allowing people to freely air their views, but this should not be seen as a leeway to personally attack the President and worse still insult him.

Much as we have been heavily influenced by the West, we still need to retain our norms and values, which encourage respect for elders, and by virtue of his position, as Head of State, respect is due to His Excellency. In Botswana there is a saying that "moeng ga a di bedi", that when literally translated means a visitor should not complain or scrutinise, hence foreigners should not take Botswana's hospitality and kindness as stupidity. A lot has recently been said about the issue where a South-African woman had likened our President to a Mosarwa.
