Democracy Is Under threat

Since April 1 there has been an influx or continuous flow of initiatives and directives from the presidency. I once said we now have a highly innovative president who is continuously thinking of how to improve people's lives and instill discipline.

The delivery has started the hard way for some people, especially the recall of Pono Moatlhodi (remember Olifant Mfa's words in 2003 that, "mma motho a bue rre Mogae a santse a busa ka gore democracy e fela le ene.

E tla re mo pusong eo go tshele ba ba ko mabitleng le magolegwa kwa kgolegelong.")
Mfa bravely said he should use his time in Parliament effectively, lest he regrets when Vice President Ian Khama takes over, as freedom of speech might be limited in the august house. He was suggesting that Khama is a dictator (Mmegi 10/10/06). Of course the initiatives like constituency football league, national service allowance, national internship programme (which is an improved and transformed Tirelo Setshaba which was stopped without any explanation), ISPAAD, labour intensive public works (namola leuba) and many more are really interesting.

Those who happen to be, directly opposite, president's thinking are questioning the timing of the initiatives. Of course we are expecting general elections in 2009 and everyone is looking forward to this exercise with curiosity.
Even though we are in the middle of the financial year 2008/2009 and at the end of NDP 9 it seems the government has a way of finding money to implement all these and some ministers even take a layman's position that the planned initiatives will not hurt government's fiscal policy.

The tragedy affected not only the grieving families but the nation at large. Batswana throughout the process stood behind the grieving families and the governments of Botswana and South Africa need much more than a pat on the back.Last Saturday was a day when family members said their last goodbyes to...
