Why is Survival calling for a diamonds and tourism boycott?

No one could be more dismayed than I that Survival International has launched a boycott on tourism and diamonds in Botswana. Doubtless, there will be the usual critics (I will answer them in a subsequent article).

They won't deter us: the moment the Bushmen are treated with fairness and humanity - but not before - we will drop the campaign, once and for all.

When that time comes, Survival will be happy in the knowledge that Sir Seretse Khama's 1960s promise to the CKGR Bushmen was finally being honoured: Botswana's famous first president told them they would have  their lands in perpetuity, which is surely no more than the country's   first inhabitants deserve. They were to be treated fairly, without the discrimination which falsely portrayed them as backward and uncivilised. Sir Seretse must have realised that such ideas were akin to the racist disdain which many Europeans felt for Africans in general, and that they should have no place in post-colonial Africa.
