Unions are letting us down

Our celebrations which came from ratification of ILO conventions by government to civil servants to unionise have come to pass and left us agonising.

We felt that as labour unions employed by the government we will have a role to play in terms of bargaining for our bread and butter issues, but it has been proven  otherwise. Firstly, the government is deliberately delaying the establishment of the bargaining structures inspite of the unions having drafted the guidelines as far back as April 2009. Nothing is forth coming.

We have just witnessed how the budget was presented to the nation -without consulting the labour unions of the country as it is a requirement. The new minister did not bother to recognise that the situation has now changed from the times when  government would tell us whether they are increasing salaries or not, in this era the two parties have to negotiate and bargain and come up with an agreed position, but this is not happening and they are doing it for a purpose.
