The petro politics of nuclear weapons

The tensions surrounding the issues of nuclear politics have been dominating the global political arena since the start of the Cold War.

Even though the dark ages of the Cold War have come to an end after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the uncertainties brought about by nuclear proliferation and tensions have continued unabated. The Asian continent which hosts a total of six nuclear superpowers has witnessed its fair share of nuclear tensions. North Korea, an impoverished, secretive, Stalinist and belligerent state has tested its nuclear missiles about three times since 2006. Its nuclear missile tests have violated airspaces of both Japan and South Korea. However the Asian nuclear crisis is not given serious attention by the international community especially the USA (itself a nuclear giant) than the crisis of nuclear in the Middle East.

In the volatile, headline grabbing Middle East, the nuclear crisis is of course terribly complex. It involves questions of geo political security, national sovereignty, racial rancour, religious contention and military prowess. Like the man himself George Grant observed that the Middle East is an enigma. The cradle of civilisation, the wellspring of faith, the powder keg of ardour and the terminus of time. There is no other place on earth where so much has happened for so long and has affected so many.  The Middle East is an ominous, swarthy and mysterious hinge upon which, it seems, all of history turns.
