Clarification on Khama boreholes

Gaborone, March 27: The Office of the President wishes to clarify an article that appeared in the Monday March 25 edition of The Monitor under the headline "Khama fights farmers for wells."

The fact of the matter is that following the 2009 Water Affairs Report, the family of the Founding President, the late Sir Seretse Khama took a decision to verify and register all boreholes and wells belonging to Sir Seretse Khama amidst claims of ownership by some individuals and syndicates of farmers. This Office would like to inform that a meeting was convened on October 8-10, 2012 under the auspices of Ngwato Land Board where some individuals and syndicates who laid claim to the boreholes and wells were invited to prove their cases.

During the meeting, some claimants did not turn up, while others were unable to produce evidence to support their assertions. Subsequently, another round of meetings was convened on October 22-24, 2012 whereby enough proof was presented in support of the ownership of the boreholes by the late Sir Seretse Khama.
