Article stigmatises gay community

The Botswana Network on Ethics, Law and HIV/AIDS (BONELA) and LEGABIBO condemns and urges the public to disregard an article entitled Rise in 'gay rape' cases worries police published on page 9 in the Mmegi newspaper of Wednesday April 25, 2012.

Speaking on behalf of the organisation, BONELA executive director Uyapo Ndadi said that whilst the article was relevant as the increase in rape cases is a cause for concern, BONELA's bone of contention emanates from the fact that the article contains no evidence that the alleged perpetrator and rape survivor are gay.  He added that by definition, being gay entails an attraction between two males on various levels (emotionally, physically, intellectually, spiritually, and sexually).

Mmegi would thus do well to apologise to the gay community in Botswana as the article trivialises and debases relationships between gay people, propelling the belief that being gay is just about sex, when in fact gay people can enjoy emotional relationships and abstain from sex.
