A rocky five years of an assured nosedive

Democratic governance has both in practice and in what is observable promote vibrant, active and solid voices and accountability; there should be political stability that is punctuated by freedom of expression, association and taking responsibility on the part of the citizen and in all civic spheres; government should be effective in public works, creating jobs, fighting poverty in real terms, empowering citizens to keep and develop their republic, implement key national objectives and provide necessary coordination in executing national development; there should be an effective , fair, just, consequential regulatory quality that assures fair play, productive competition, meritocracy and does not stifle growth as well as promotes excellence; there should be the Rule of Law where no one is above the law and the law means the same to all as opposed to selective justice, the judiciary should remain independent and uncorrupted while the checks and balances of our democratic culture are kept intact; there should be a zero tolerance for corruption.

The past five years have seen the soaring of corruption, stress and unhappiness as well as diminishing profile on credit rating, human development indices.  The legislative strength of our Parliament has been challenged at the hands of a dear leader mentality promoted by the man who has been on the presidential seat for the past five years.  During the same period, transparency in most areas is suffering, there is no intention to let access to information, poverty and unemployment are becoming an acceptable part of our existence, the President has become the Chief Welfare Officer of the state and the economy and dependency has found comfortable habitat more during his tenure than any time before.

Internal on the part of the ruling party has become a vice and maintaining the democratic culture of Botswana has left a lot to be desired.  During the last five years of the rule of this President, institutions have decreased in strength and independence, white collar corruption in institutions, the rule of law has become a joke and the economy badly run with the President happier with pet project that make his name as opposed to the good of the nation of Botswana during a competition intense 21st Century.
