A culture of impunity exists in the civil service

Public Accounts Committees should demand corrective justice rather than retributive justice because the latter does not help much in making sure that the coffers of the state are protected and replenished, writes NEHEMIAH MODUBILE

My experience as Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee has shown that some of our civil servants have developed a culture of impunity, which culture must be stopped before the nation’s coffers are exhausted.

I do posit that this culture is borne out of the fact that there is no punishment for people who misappropriate government funds and those who neglect their jobs, The result is that some government projects end up unfinished or are finished far beyond scheduled dates, ending with huge cost overruns.
