Zim Man In Airport Bomb Panic

A naughty Zimbabwean man caused pandemonium at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport last Saturday after he claimed that there was a bomb in an Air Botswana plane that was preparing to take off for Johannesburg at 7.30am. The hoax led to the grounding of Flight BP 209 and the cancellation of the next Air Botswana flight to Johannesburg.

Sir Seretse Khama Airport Police chief Tebogo Madisa said that the source of the panic, a coloured Zimbabwean was arrested shortly after he gave the false alarm. "The man who is a local businessman claims that he was only joking. We were able to arrest him after he was described by the official to whom he played the hoax," he said. Madisa added that the man would appear in court today to answer a charge of common nuisance.

"It is possible that we could press other charges against the man, should we find it necessary," he said. A BDF bomb squad from Mapharangwane Airbase some 80 kilometres west of Gaborone had to be called in to check the plane and clear the threat. In the meantime passengers who had already been cleared sat waiting expectantly to be told that everything is now safe and they could board the flight.
