Young robbers get 10 yrs, ordered to pay Somali P40,000

FRANCISTOWN: Principal Magistrate Peggy Mandadume has sentenced youthful robbers to 10 years' imprisonment for robbing a Somali refugee of cash and permanently damaging his eye.

The accused persons, Kenanabo Tshabatau, 23, Daniel Moatswi, 25, Kabelo Tshukudu, 25, and Moshe Nakale, 25, are said to have attacked Amhed Gutale, damaged his eye and got away with a wallet containing P3,200, R1,050, a driver's licence, his refuge identity card, an ATM card and other business documents on April 30, 2009.

The three accused persons were sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment, while the fourth accused was sentenced to six months for conspiracy to receive stolen goods. During submissions and mitigation, the first accused's attorney Gontse Simon said the accused persons might have been influenced by youthful exuberance and alcohol, which the magistrate dismissed.
