WUC takeover of water services queried by North West councillors

*There is looming retrenchment of Water Affairs employees-Dr Kedikilwe
MAUN: Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) takeover of Ngamiland is slated for April next year, outgoing Minister of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources, Dr Ponatshego Kedikilwe, told North West councillors recently.

Kedikilwe said WUCs acquisition of water and wastewater management in Ngamiland and Okavango villages by 2013 is part of the water sector reforms, which commenced in 2009. He said to bring efficiency in water delivery, the government decided to separate institutional responsibilities between the delivery of water and sanitation services and the management and development of water resources.

A model adopted to institute the reform is that WUC take the responsibility for water and sewage services delivery in villages previously serviced by the Department of Water Affairs (DWA) and the local authorities. Kedikilwe said DWA will on the other hand assume the role for water resources management. Part of DWA mandate will be to ensure equitable beneficiation of water for national priorities.
