The statement carried by Mmegi Newspaper of 26 August 2011 headlined 'Gaborone Water May be Polluted' is misleading and has caused untold public panic over the safety of the Gaborone Dam's water.

The Water Utilities Corporation, as the owner and operator of the Gaborone Dam, has carried out investigations on the Molatedi Dam water at the receiving point since allegations of pollution of the Molatedi Dam in South Africa were first raised by the Zeerust News August Edition (Issue 17). Molatedi Dam supplies WUC with raw water, which is treated at the Gaborone Water Treatment Plant and supplied to Gaborone and Greater Gaborone.

The tests by WUC did not detect any metals nor elevated levels of any substance such as faecal coliforms that cannot be lowered to acceptable levels using conventional treatment methods. Historical data of the water WUC receives from Molatedi Dam also show no presence of dangerous substances that could lead to the water being declared unfit for human consumption.
