The political future of the Minister of Finance and Development Planning Baledzi Gaolathe is uncertain following his ill health that has kept him in and out of hospital for the past year.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that Gaolathe might not stand for the parliamentary seat for the forthcoming general elections in the next three months. The appointment of  Acting minister Kenneth Mathambo, last Friday, has also fueled speculation that Gaolathe may not stand for elections.

However, Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) Executive Secretary Dr Comma Serema denied that Gaolathe was stepping down.  "We don't know about it. All we know is that he is our candidate for Tonota North," he said.  He also denied knowledge that some BDP members were already preparing to contest for the constituency. Serema would not discuss the seriousness of Gaolathe's condition saying, "it would be unethical to discuss another person's health".
