Water woes over - WUC

WUC corporate communications manager Matida Mmipi says the breakdown of the pipe has been the major cause of the dry spell in Gaborone and surrounding areas - from Mochudi to GoodHope.

She assured that the nation has seen the end of the nightmare. She, however, noted that although supply will be restored to normal, there are fears that there could be further water shortages in the near future, especially in the southern part of the country, owing to the very worrisome water levels in the dams in the region. According to records from the WUC, Gaborone Dam, the largest in the southern region, is at 29.23 percent. This is enough supply for 12 months. However, the water level can seriously be affected by increased water usage and evaporation due to high temperatures.

According to Mmipi, the corporation usually gets 84,000 cubic metres from Gaborone Dam to supply Gaborone and greater Gaborone, which have a daily demand of 145 cubic metres. To meet the daily demand, the corporation gets some more water from Letsibogo Dam, Molatedi Dam and Bokaa Dam. "We no longer get 84,000 cubic metres from Gaborone. We get only around 74,000 cubic metres due to the low water level. This means that supply from the dam has been reduced. We therefore have to find alternatives to make for the shortage," said Mmipi.Further, she said another challenge is that Nnywane Dam, which usually produced 10 percent for Lobatse's daily supply, has dried up.  This will put more pressure on dams in the northern part of the country, she said. Currently, Bokaa Dam is at 34.27 percent, Letsibogo Dam (92.62 percent), Shashe Dam (96.62 percent) while Ntimbale Dam is 100 percent full.
