Water rationing surpasses demand reduction target

The water demand reduction target set a few weeks ago has been surpassed by 100 percent, the Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) has said. WUC spokesperson, Matida Mmipi has said that they have achieved a 60 percent reduction in water demand since they set the 30 percent target last month.

However, despite the achievement, the country is still plagued by serious water shortage, especially in the greater Gaborone area that stretches from Mochudi to Lobatse, she cautioned. Addressing a press conference yesterday, WUC CEO, Godfrey Mudanga said that the corporation is still haunted by drying dams. The corporation is mostly facing challenges in supplying the greater Gaborone area, which has a population of over 500,000 people and a daily demand of 125 million litres.

Mudanga said that Nnywane Dam has already dried up while Bokaa Dam is expected to run out of water in the next four months.  Gaborone Dam will dry up if there is no good inflow in the next nine months. The dam is only 21.4 percent full and is already experiencing some hydraulic failure of pumps. Mudanga said that another problem is that the 7.3 million cubic metres per year that Botswana gets from Molatedi Dam in South Africa has been reduced by half because the dam level is now below 26 percent. Currently, greater Gaborone is relying heavily on Letsibogo Dam through the North-South Carrier pipe. Mudanga said that the pipe is plagued with inefficient and unreliable pumps mainly due to aging. The pipe remains unreliable despite having been refurbished in 2011-2012.
