The Auditor-General has warned that Botswana's number one tourism hub, Chobe is fast losing its sparkle due to poor management by the Department of Wildlife and National parks.

In a report, the Auditor-General says the repercussions of non-implementation of the Chobe Riverfront Decongestion Strategy may be catastrophic to the economic well-being of residents living in the surrounding area. The report says non-implementation may compromise the government's economic diversification drive if the sustainability of the river is not given the attention it deserves.

According to the audit, the consequences of congestion of tourists within the Chobe River and the eastern side of the Chobe National Park has resulted in the complete erosion of popular tourists spot and White Sands, which has now become history. The White Sands was a popular stopping spot for tourists embarking on site seeing along the river through to the park. By  2010, the white sands on the spot had been replaced by black clay soil common along the river banks.
