Video reveals the horrors of illegal sand mining

Illegal sand mining might not sound too serious a crime and harm to the environment, animals and humans, especially in places where sand is not considered a commodity.

However, by means of a documentary video, Gabane Community Trust takes you through what illegal sand mining can do to lives and to the river itself.  While you enjoy the smooth instrumental music in the background, which reinforces the harmony and peace that the river once brought to its people, the video reveals how Ditlhakane, a river which was the historical source of life for people of Gabane, has been degraded by illegal sand mining regardless of efforts by the government to safeguard rivers.

It engages you through the discussion that aims at revealing what is happening at the moment, while at the end finds out why nothing has been done to protect rivers, which are a source of life to many of us.  The video gives a synopsis of how full of life the river used to be and what it meant to the different tribes who relied on it years ago.  A headman in the video explains that the river was named Ditlhakane due to the fact that several tribes relied on it for their daily needs.
