UDC optimistic of victory in Phikwe East

SELEBI-PHIKWE: The people of Selebi-Phikwe East are happy with the arrival of the Umbrella for Democratic Change on their shores. Or so the Secretary of Botswana Movement for Democracy's Political Education Committee, Dimpho Mashaba, believes.

Mashaba, who is an aspirant Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency, says people here view UDC as the only alternative instrument of change and believes he will win the elections because people, especially the youth, are ready for change. "Never in the history of this town have I seen its citizens so enthusiastic about their role in nation building and politics," he says. "They are driven by a desire to work as a collective."

In this interview with Mmegi, Mashaba's constant reprise is how, in his view, "the people" will not accept any erosion of civil liberties and insidious insinuation of fear that symptomise a democracy in deficit.Mashaba says once in power, UDC will cultivate goodwill in Selebi-Phikwe; goodwill as means of bringing forth loyalty and coherence among the business community, employees and ordinary people. "The constituency office will partner up with other stakeholders to sponsor community activities," he says. "We pledge to assist the homeless to have decent shelter, as well as attend to out-of-school youth and other disadvantaged members of the society."
