The church has not made up its mind yet

The United Congregational Church of Southern Africa (UCCSA) Botswana, which recently set up a commission of enquiry to determine whether pentecostalism should be allowed or disallowed in the church, has rejected a resolution to split into two sides.

The resolution was a key recommendation from a taskforce appointed over the matter. The taskforce, which delivered its report at the Synod conference held in Mahalapye recently, presented a number of findings most of which showed that the church is seriously divided on whether to accommodate charismatic theology. The opponents of pentecostalism, who are largely the more conservative and older members, have argued that the use of instruments and other flamboyant forms of worship associated with the pentecostal movement could contaminate the UCCSA’s culture.

Proponents however argue that the word of God has no specific culture and different gifts should not be suppressed. Those in favour of welcoming pentacostalism want to be allowed to prophesy, heal and pray in mass, among others.
