The University of Botswana Debating Masters Association has made history by being the first Botswana debating team to win the South African championships.

The South African National Universities Debating Championships started 13 years ago in Stellenbosch and they have never been won by a university outside South Africa. After dominating the tournament and breaking to octo-finals in first position with 15 points in the eight preliminary rounds, the University debating team of Ummar Segadimo and Maswabi Maswabi sailed through the quarter-finals and semi-finals.

UB outflanked over 90 teams to qualify. Competitors included the University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch and Wits. The team then snatched the title during the grand finale held at the Bloemfontein City Hall.
