TSM rationalises schools management

The Teaching Service Management (TSM) has employed 1, 000 more teachers and relieved those in management positions from teaching to ensure schools are well managed. TSM director Opelo Makhendlela says schools around the country have not been well managed because those in management positions have classes to teach.

"If one had a class to teach and at the same time supervise other teachers, they would not be able to do a through job. We want them to concentrate on the running of the schools," Makhendlela stressed.

Amongst those exempted from teaching are the headmasters in primary schools with less than 1,000 pupils, those with more students and the deputy headmasters. In secondary schools they include heads of department "because those are the schools where there are many problems," Makhendlela explained. The TSM chief stated that guidance and counselling teachers have also been relieved of their teaching chores so they can concentrate on their core responsibilities.
