FRANCISTOWN: The ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) could have settled for any politician to coordinate and manage the Mokobaxane-Kedia council by-election, but opted for Botlogile Tshireletso, the Mahalapye East Member of Parliament (MP) and assistant Minister of Local Government.

The by-election was held to replace the ward councillor, Galesebiwe Gaothuse who died last November. Seasoned politicians that are familiar with the Boteti South region like Lebonaamang Mokalake and former Mokoboxane-Kedia councillor, Boikhutso Matekane, were overlooked.

Matekane retired from politics prior to the last general elections after serving as councillor for an uninterrupted 25 years. While Tshireletso seemed to have been on unfamiliar terrain, she was still considered a wise and hardworking campaigner. Having joined politics in the late 1970s, observers also believed that she was the right person to manage the elections.
