Transnational organised crime a problem

The just ended 17th session of the Botswana/Zambia joint permanent commission on defence and security that was held in Gaborone has resolved to double their efforts in curbing transnational threats. The commission had noted with concern, the continued cases of transnational organised crime such as smuggling, illegal migration, poaching and drug trafficking that are common on the two countries borders.

However, the commission also noted with satisfaction that the common border remained peaceful and stable during the period under review. Nonetheless, the commission resolved that the Defence and Security institutions of the two countries should continue to liaise at all levels of co-operation and enhance joint operations along the common border, in order to address security challenges that may affect the two countries.

The commission also noted with appreciation, progress achieved on the resolutions of the 16th Session of the Commission signified by several bilateral meetings, exchange visits, joint patrols as well as information sharing. The two delegations agreed to nurture cordial relations, for continued peace and stability between the two countries. When addressing the delegation yesterday morning the Minister of Defence from Zambia, Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba emphasised the importance of the two countries ensuring that agreed resolutions are implemented.
